Call right away if you have

  • A severe toothache or pain that keeps you up at night
  • Swelling in your face, gums or jaw
  • A broken, chipped or knocked-out tooth

On your way to the office

  • Rinse with warm salt water.
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of your face to reduce swelling.
  • If a permanent tooth was knocked out, hold it by the crown (not the root), keep it in milk and call us immediately.

If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, or swelling that spreads quickly, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a dental emergency?

Severe pain, swelling, bleeding that won't stop, a broken or knocked-out tooth, and a lost crown or filling that leaves the tooth sensitive.

What should I do if a permanent tooth is knocked out?

Pick it up by the crown without touching the root, rinse it gently and keep it in milk. Call us immediately: the first hours are key to trying to save it.

Should I go to the hospital ER for a toothache?

If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, yes, go to the hospital or call 911. For other dental emergencies, a dentist can treat the cause of the pain directly.
